Mary Ann’s Naturals is a small business operated by me (Mary Ann Andersen) and my husband, Dave. I have spent years learning how to care for my family in a healthy, nutritious and sustainable manner. I am a career homemaker, wife, mother of four children, and grandmother who lives in the beautiful rural community of Forest Grove, Oregon.
Several years ago I started reading the labels on beauty products and doing research on the listed ingredients. I was shocked to learn that mainstream beauty products routinely contain chemical ingredients that may be toxic, carcinogenic and disruptive to human hormones. For example, according to researchers at the University of California-Berkeley’s School of Public Health, no less than 32 commonly sold lipsticks and lip glosses recently tested positive for lead, cadmium, chromium, aluminum and five other metals — some at potentially toxic levels. Furthermore, skin care products are not subject to pre-market approval by the FDA, meaning that the beauty industry does not have to prove that their ingredients are safe and effective before they begin using them in commercial products. (And even after FDA learned of lead and other heavy metals in lipsticks, they decided that the levels were not high enough to warrant any action on their part.)
Unable to find commercial skin care products that were completely chemical-free, safe and effective on my own sensitive skin, and realizing that neither government nor industry were really watching out for consumer health and safety, I taught myself how to make my own products using only pure, natural and organic ingredients. And unlike other “natural” skin care manufacturers who seem to pride themselves on the sheer number of ingredients they cram into their products, I like to keep things simple and basic – using just the ingredients that are truly necessary for a lovely and effective product.
Friends and acquaintances began using my products and reported great success. The feedback I received was so positive that my husband and I decided to start a small business and offer the products for sale. All of our products are hand-crafted in small batches.
I am grateful to my computer-savvy and amazing husband who created our website and works on other important facets of the business. We have been married for 34 years and truly enjoy working as a team, sharing our strengths as we travel the road of life together.
